Specially Designated Nationals:
Frequently Asked
Questions
What Is OFAC?
Here's a summary taken from the
OFAC website:
"The Office of Foreign Assets Control
("OFAC") of the US Department of the Treasury administers and enforces
economic and trade sanctions based on US foreign policy and national
security goals against targeted foreign countries and regimes,
terrorists, international narcotics traffickers, those engaged in
activities related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,
and other threats to the national security, foreign policy or economy of
the United States. OFAC acts under Presidential national emergency
powers, as well as authority granted by specific legislation, to impose
controls on transactions and freeze assets under US jurisdiction."
Who We Are Brown & Company, Inc. is
an Information Technology services provider, specializing in the
financial services industry. You can learn more about us at
www.brownandcompany.net. We are not affiliated with the United
States Treasury Department or Office of Foreign Assets Control in any
way. We do take the publically available data from the OFAC website and
redistribute it in an easy to use searchable format.
Why did you create this website? We created the OFAC Search Engine for a banking client of ours in
early 2001. At that time the website was for internal use only. After September 11, 2001, we decided to publish the search engine
on the Internet where anyone could use it, free of charge. The
advertisements displayed on the pages help defray the costs of maintaining the search engine.
Where does the data for the website
come from? The data comes directly from the
OFAC SDN list on the OFAC website. OFAC provides the raw data and we
import that data into a database that can be easily searched using a web
browser.
How often is the data updated?
OFAC doesn't release data on any regular schedule, but whenever OFAC
releases new data we import that data into our search engine within 12
hours. When you perform a search, the "Last Updated" date
should be the
same as the last updated date on the
OFAC website.
We provide the easiest to use OFAC search engine
on the Internet. All OFAC search engines use the same data, so why pay
for something when you don't have to? If you have any additional questions or
suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact us

email or telephone: (915) 875-0000.
